An avant-garde Belgian fashion aesthetic associated with the group of graduates from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp who burst onto the London fashion scene in 1986 — including Martin Margiela, Dries Van Noten, and Ann Demeulemeester. Known for deconstructed tailoring, intellectual rigor, and a rejection of trend cycles. Common pieces include deliberately unfinished or deconstructed jackets showing inner construction, unusual fabric draping, asymmetric hems, dark and earthy palettes, unusual material pairings, and sculptural rather than decorative accessories.
