Sunshine pop, also referred to as soft pop, emerged during the 1960s as a music subgenre with a focus on lush harmonies, orchestral arrangements, and bright melodies. It often has a cheerful sound paired with melancholic lyrics and came to be associated with Southern California through groups like The Beach Boys and The Mamas & the Papas. The style often revolved around a bright and warm color palette with shades of orange, yellow, and brown and featured motifs of the sun, flowers, parks, and rain.
