Oceanpunk originated in the 1990s as a science fiction genre centered on human oceanic exploration in a 19th-century register, often set in an apocalyptic environment. Styles draw on three sources at once. Pirates supply one. Victorian technology supplies another, close to steampunk. Sci-fi technology supplies the third.
